MMA Anarchist

The distinctive anti-capitalism tattoos of MMA fighter Jeff Monson, who was demonstrating at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota. Taken from Danny Ghitis’s blog.

I’m not particularly interested in politics, though I would consider myself slightly more informed than the average person.  I sat in on a talk by Jeff Monson here in Manchester a few years ago.  He did an extended Q+A with the two dozen or so people who were there, speaking about his political views.

I found his political views somewhat naive.  I think he supports the principles but doesn’t understand the actual logistics.  being an anarchist and anti-capitalist is like being opposed to the concept of sadness. The anti-sad campaigners want everyone to be happy, but don’t understand the causes of sadness or why it exists in the world, and offer no remedy.

But fuck it, Monson’s a professional fighter.  Of the hundreds I’ve met I doubt a handful are politically minded (except maybe retired fighter Pete Tiarks, who keeps a blog I can barely comprehend here).

  1. [...] weren’t aware, Monson is a hardcore anarchist … more on that here. Here’s what Hywel Teague had to say about Monson’s philosophy: I found his political views somewhat naive.  I think [...]

Sounds like you are naive. Apparently you are unaware of Anarchist ideas. Maybe you think it’s spray painted jackets and punk bands. Anarcho-Syndicalism? Libertarian-Socialism? Parecon? Google search a little and maybe you’ll find the alternative proposals. Or maybe you’ll find alternatives already exist but it might take awhile for mainstream to shed the illusion that extreme class division is normalcy and simply needs to be abandoned. Concentrated power is very real. To oppose this is not some vague concept. Are you sure you know why you would defend it?

    • well I never heard Jeff myself, I dunno how good of an advocate he is but you can find a pretty good description of what were for here: http://www.infoshop.org/faq/index.html – hope you’ll find answers to your questions there, without any nativity. pleas keep in mind – status quo is not objective, its just the most popular idea at the moment.

  3. Sounds to me that any alternative to capitalism is portrayed by the misinformed as a naive or unrealistic proposal. Conditioning, as the proverbial ringing bell, seems to trigger an instant reaction towards discarding the resistance towards concentration of power and an implicit defense of it.

  4. Viva Anarhia! Viva Antifa! We are the Anarchist Federation from Romania. Good luck and solidarity!

  5. Zuffa is giving us 2 free cards this month, WEC 46 and UFN 20, the least we can as hardcore fans is to help out a struggling UFC 108.

  6. Have to be able to tell you that I reckoned this one was a incredibly excellent write-up. I have continuously liked MMA fights and it’s so good to see your weblog that takes Mixed martial arts to this level. I have not long ago started out to get in to Mma lessons myself and also I am really hoping to be able to end up with at least a tad reasonably competitive at it. Not really wanting to step into a ring or a single thing like that just at this point! Any information about everything that I should be working on to do well. Anyhow, do continue to keep up the great job with this blog along with the fine blogposts.

  7. Scott Sommers Says:

Actually, many MMA fighters are quite political, although all of them (except Jeff) are right-wing Repuiblicans.
