Where’d you get those muscles?

“The name’s Jake, Jake Da Muss…”
Ever seen Once Were Warriors? There is a scene where a massive Maori walks into a bar and puts some earache music on the jukebox. Jake Da Muss, the principal character (all-round badass and bit of a mean fucker) saunters up to him. The conversation is short and sweet. It goes something like…
“Gee, where’d you get those muscles from, bro?” says Jake. “You’ve been lifting those weights, huh?”
Jake’s not small, but this guy is way bigger than him. When ‘Muscles’ tells Jake to fuck off, Jake kicks the shit out of him – he goes back to his mates and remarks, “Too much weights, not enough speed work. Useless prick”.

Over-sized muscles? Check. Uncontrollable flailing? Check.
When are fighters going to learn – body building does not make you a better fighter?
Disco muscles are all well and good if all you are about is looking ‘good’. Getting buff comes with the hard training of being an MMA fighter anyway, so why do low level fighters still think that the size of their biceps directly contributes to their martial prowess?
Anyway, check out the scene in question here:

That’s why my motto is “don’t let the fat fool ya!!!”

“…why do low level fighters still think that the size of their biceps directly contributes to their martial prowess?”
Vanity, there’s nothing better than people knowing you do “that cage fightin’ stuff” and having the muscle to show for it, big chest, big arms, 6 pack… it LOOKS great but who cares if it doesnt function, as long as you LOOK the part.
Everyone is guilty of being vain, the ones who you see on the mat a year/2 years on are the ones who realise it’s not all about aesthetics.

Fedor – pure function, no aesthetics

I agree with Lee, Fedor is the perfect example.
I don’t agree that “everyone is guilty of being vain”. Everyone is guilty of equating muscular size with ability however, that’s programmed into our survival system.

Haha, I’m guilty of being vain

Once were Warriors is a great film….as always…a better book. Thats beside the point…
Good way of getting the point across….I stopped doing the typical gym work out once i realised it wasn’t getting me anywhere.

i could be seen as one of the those vain gym bunny,s lol fact of the matter is i only do one weights session a week and that consists of all kettle bells apart from cleans, i actually have the shape i do as i was a 100 and 200 metre sprinter from an early age and spent countless winters in the gym doing days and hours of power work, i have actually lost lots of weight since competing in mma as i realised competing at 14 stone would have got me badly hurt lol but yeah it looks good and i like it lol

My Dad interpreted for Alan Duff, the author of the series of books behind the movies, on his tour of the South Pacific.
Great guy. The books are great too.

True true, I read the book some time ago, it is markedly different to the film, but both work in their own way
