Welcome to Notes from Ringside

Hi, I’m Hywel Teague. You may know me as the editor of Fighters Only magazine, and such informational videos, ‘Making fighters your friend and influencing promoters: How not to incur the wrath of the MMA industry‘, and ‘Ringside Photography: Buy a camera and never pay for VIP tickets again‘.

I’ve been involved in MMA for a fair while now, and not just as a journalist. I began by rolling around on extremely well-worn mats in a freezing room with a leaky roof and holes in the wall. I saw my coach go from blue belt to black and witnessed my friends and team-mates bring home title belts and honours. I even put myself into the mix once or twice, stepping into both ring and cage with some degree of success.

I’ve started this blog for a few reasons. First of all, there is much to be discussed in the world of MMA, and I can’t always put it in the magazine. I see and hear things that just don’t fit, but want to share them with you. I would also like to bring you tales from inside the gym. I’m an active MMA’ist, and spend plenty of time in the ‘lab’, training and generally mucking about with different ways of taking suckers out.

Over time, you’ll see posts, pictures, videos and who knows what all grace the virtual pages of this weblog. Stay tuned, it’s going to be fun.

  1. Editor of Fighters Only Mag starts a blog.

Hywel Teague, editor of Fighters Only magazine, has started his own blog, Notes from Ringside. There’s all kinds of MMA and BJJ related goodness in there, as well as the odd scoop that he is able to scoop with his well-connected scooping devices….

Lovin’ the Troy McClure-style intro there Hywel – keep it up!
MMA in the US is obviously now an extremely popular and accepted sport but elsewhere it is still being met with howls of derision from many quarters who claim it is little more than human cock fighting.
I have blogged (link below) on one politician’s reaction to the sport ahead of a MAX Xtreme fighting event in Glasgow, Scotland in a couple of weeks. The news programme even dares to pose the question – are fighters thugs or athletes! I suspect this kind of reaction is replicated whenever the sport tries to break into new markets.
How long did it take for this furore to die down in the States and for it to become an accepted sport? And how do we shut these uneducated and misguided PC brigade up – other than a swift back suplex?!
